CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 4/2 Clemson extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 23 games at Memorial Stadium on Saturday night, defeating Boston College 59-7 on Homecoming. The win marked the eighth time a Clemson team has started a season 8-0.
The Leather Helmet, given to the MVP of the game, was Diondre Overton who hauled in his first three touchdown receptions of the season. Overton recorded three receptions for 119 receiving yards and an average of 39.7 yards a catch to lead the Tigers (8-0, 6-0 ACC). All three of his receptions found the endzone, scoring catches of 22, 63 and 34 yards.
Travis Etienne recorded his fifth three-touchdown game of his Clemson career, scoring three first half touchdowns, all from within five yards of the endzone. Etienne rushed for 109 yards on 16 attempts and caught three passes for 33 yards. The junior running back now has nine touchdowns on the season, and is one touchdown shy of tying the school record for rushing touchdowns (47 – James Davis).
Trevor Lawrence continued to shine for the Tigers, completing 16-19 passes and throwing for 275 yards and three touchdowns. Lawrence now has 17 touchdown passes on the season. Amari Rodgers added his third touchdown of the season, as Lawrence connected with Rodgers for a 19-yard strike.
The Clemson defense held the Boston College rushing attack to only 96 yards. The Eagles came into the contest ranked sixth in the nation and first in the ACC with 278.3 rushing yards per game. Logan Rudolph returned a fumble 39 yards to score his first career touchdown. Chad Smith led the defense with nine total tackles, a forced fumble and a sack.
The Tigers will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 2 for Military Appreciation Day when they host a “Purple Out” at Memorial Stadium when the Wofford Terriers come to town. Game time is set for 4 p.m. on ACC Network.
